Radical theology as reaction?

I just wonder, is radical theology, defined by such figures as Spong, more of a reaction to fundamentalism than a serious attempt to appreciate the mystery of God? Spong’s work seemed to take Freud, Nietzsche, and Darwin for granted, along with other scientific findings. The problem with science, like theology, is that it too is a field of widely variant opinions.
